I'm looking to write a webmaster tool to retrieve information from various engines including information like backlinks and all that stuff, but ATW says you have to contact them for permission to do so, even in a non-profit venture. So... where are they?
If you wish to make commercial use of AlltheWeb.com, take the results from an AlltheWeb.com search and reformat and display them, or mirror the AlltheWeb.com home page or results pages on your Web site, or send automated queries to AlltheWeb.com you must first enter into a commercial agreement with FAST or sign up for a relevant Developers Program, otherwise you may not do so.For information on entering into a commercial arrangement with FAST please contact atw@support.altavista.com.
But is it really "commercial use" if you're just planning on making a freeware type tool and not planning on making any money off it?
Sure. You're using ATW's intelectual property and resources.
The blurb Heini posted didn't specifically address fees, so their might be cases where they allow free use (Oh, Heini posted again to clarify a bit).
Whether fee-based or gratis ATW probably requires an agreement as to how you use, present and access its data.
