Almost exactly a month since last update :)
Comparison search I perfomred - someone looking to buy "widgets" in Google gets 8 out of the first 50 results as relevant......in ATW all 50 are relevant. The difference is primarily related to the way ATW is handling the <title> tag, page content and then the backlinks/anchor text.
Google's application of Anchor Text, PR, Title Tag and then page content is putting it way behind.
Google has become totally paranoid about manipulation and thus has deployed an algo that attemps to combat manipulation but only succeeds to throw out good results.
Spend some marketing $$$ ATW, you need to get people to see these results.
But the SERP's have been changing quite a bit from day to day for the past three or four days now, and for the most part, in our categories, the results contain more spammy sites and more obscure sites for broad search terms. In other words, the results seem worse. But they keep changing...so just like Google, we're staring to adapt a wait and see attitude.
We're wondering if they are not going thru some big changes also, since the results keep bouncing around so much. Big changes might make sense, given their recent corporate history.
Anyone got some loose change laying around? I'm thinking it's time that all of here at WW pool our resources and start our own SE. I'm sure we could do better ;-)
At the moment I find myself checking ATW against google, partly for the SEO reasons and to see who indexes better or quicker, and partly because I like the interface and results. Its nice.
I'm under the impression that ATW is reasonably well-used in europe, is this the case, or have I got memories and wishes mixed up again? ;)
Their results are way better than earlier this year, but man o man, can the PLEASE figure out the subdomain spam thing? Jeez, first thirty results for multi-word search temrm are all the same domain like spam.domain.com spam1.domain.com spam2.domain.com. Sheesh.
OV very likely will go the exact same route. They have bought ATW because they did not want to happen a second AOL on them. So they decided they needed to be able to offer the full package to their customers, PPC plus first class websearch.
So sad as it may be I don't really expect OV to try and push ATW as a search destination to the masses.

I asked Overture's technology officer about that last month. He said that they were going to be trying new things/experiments over the coming months, but that they were not going to push it as a destination... He added that if word of mouth grows and people start to come, then that would be great, but it's not what they are actively trying to do.
