the url investigator is a nice and handy tool for alltheweb stats to optimize it. cool.

"I'm Feeling Lucky" keeps the page clean and clear similar to a search engine based in Mountain View, CA. Each catalog highlights a different color theme, making for a friendly searching experience.

One of the big pluses with fast is their ability to index all of my dynamic content - that google seems to have a really tough time doing. I like the new features looks like a step in the right direction.

As to the whois: it serves as a very good reminder how easy it is for everybody, competitors, customers, searchengines, to relate a site to a person or company.

Interesting is however how ATW has put on a mass compatible interface. While personally I liked the old design better, the Fast crew has constantly blocked every attempt at gettin a mass compatible interface.

Now OV had announced ATW would remain being a testbed, R & D sandbox etc.
This redesign seems to point into a different direction.

but maybe it's still for testing. i think providing different color-shemes via css is not that hard to implement, nor link easywhois or the wayback machine. even the (back)link-count, and domain name in other pages search result count isn't something really new - it's all just displayed on one page.

maybe they want to check if they can wave some hype and / or test what a even slimmier se-page can add to overtures portfolio.

The new look is fine as far as it goes -- neither better nor worse than Google. But of course people don't use G because it looks cool (it doesn't), but rather because it brings back results that most users find to be useful.

In my opinion, to be a truly major contender ATW will have to make a Herculean effort to index *all* the relevant sites that they come across, whether or not people pay them, and refine their (already pretty good) search technology to bring back results that are even more targeted than Google. Those of you who know this stuff can likely see a scenario where that can happen. I just use their service, but do not work in the field.

Certainly they could have some kind of paid enhancements to make those results stand out -- as an income producing model -- but anything less than a full indexing of the available important information on the WWW will keep them at best a second choice service. Right now, their url submit page is clearly "pay to play", and that won't cut it in the big leagues where most people want specific information, not results based on the $$ paid.

Looks like they're going to be using Dmoz.org as well. At least, I did a search on my site's URL using the new research tool and I was presented with a "Topics" section down the foot of the results page that showed the same sub-category that my site is listed in on Dmoz.

However, right now, the category is empty.

reno, there is no pay to play at all (wether before nor after the redesign). [alltheweb.com...] will give you the possibility to submit your site for free, you do not even need to put a email into the form.

for me it took 3 days until getting indexed at the end of february.

Sneaky: Overture results look EXACTLY like the normal results except the really small print beside the listing. I thought the ftc was getting SE's to move away from tricking users?

Are some of the Advanced search options different? Like...

The Topics link is sort of dmoz but not really. Very out of date for one thing, and also not complete. Naturally my site isn't listed as being in the "topic" that I've been listed in dmoz for years. I hope the reason is not once again because I was stupid enough to pfi with lycos.
