Fast and Lycos talk "monetization"

I hate to parade my ignorance on anything (damn it!)... but what exactly is "monetization"? I presume some sort of payment scheme... any ideas?

And Alltheweb is, as Rencke remarked months ago, a showcase for Fast, generating very little traffic.
Plus it was reported, that lycos europe has made a deal with Espotting for a top5 auctioning. (Though this has since not been confirmed as far as I know)
Still pretty unclear to me what might come out of this.

It seems Lycos is going to sell banner ads on the Alltheweb site. I suppose this means that Alltheweb will not be seen as a competitor of Lycos, but more like an additional "partner".

The fact that Fast has freshened up its site and decided on a name ("Alltheweb" instead of "Fast") indicates that Fast intends to let Alltheweb be more than a showcase. Maybe Alltheweb will be to Lycos, what Google is to Yahoo.

The fact that Fast has taken over all Lycos sites is not a trifle. Until recently Lycos used the old "T Rex" engine on most of its European sites.

As the ownership of the national Lycoses vary from country to country, the individal versions could choose their own search engine provider. Now it seems that the major stock holder in all (most?) of them, Terra Lycos, is insisting that Fast is to be the main results provider, mostly in order to achieve a more coherent branding.

I would expect that Fast will try to take over some of Inktomi's customers as well. If Inktomi lost MSN or HotBot to Fast, they would be in big trouble.

Well the banner ads are up now. Seem to be pretty much RON (run of network) with a large amount of advertising for the Lycos Network. It's about time the two got together isn't it?
