general pointers?

Hi guys. I am new to the affiliate thing. My problem is that I have high traffic loads and very low conversions to sales at the destination site. i.e. between .4 and .8%.

Could anyone give me some general issues/pointers with regards to increasing conversions? Just some starting indications would be very very much appreciated.

high targeted traffic or just high traffic?

You will get better conversion rates if you are getting targeted traffic

example you only sell "the lesser spotted widget"

but your traffic is for "common widget" of which only say 10% would ever be interested in the lesser spotted and only 10% of that customer base is buying.

If you are getting targetted traffic it's either a crappy product or over priced.

most of my traffic is very targeted already. It all comes from search engine results for specific brands and products.

my problem is that even with this very targeted traffic, by the time the user clicks through to the actual shopping site and buys the product, the conversion rate plummets.

now, i can't do anything about the actual shopping site. But i was wondering if there were any general tips on maximising clickthroughs on an affiliate page..

If possible try and offer more than one supplier of the same product and put both suppliers on the same page. The customer seems to get a nice secure feeling when he has compared prices from several sources. I'd go so far as to suggest that between 3 and 5 suppliers of each product is even better....just my feeling....and my sales figures ;)
