Funny how that wasn't obvious and it took a survey to find out. However, it is nice to have some empirical data supporting one of my biggest web convictions. If you want to keep your users, don't give them pop up ads.
I did some work for a property web site, long since gone, who paid £20,000 for a survey. The main conlclusion was that 86% of their visitors were planning to move home in the next two years.
