Target audience global or local?

With affiliate sites which is best?

Hi all,

Thanks for the great contributions on the Three best affiliate programs [webmasterworld.com] post.

When setting up an affiliate site from scratch what are the pros and cons of local (ie country specific) and global target mkts?

My theme would work for America or Engaland and English speakning countries so I've not even considered going local. Perhaps I should, What do you think?

Keyword research should tell you if local targeting is worth it or not.

If no one is searching for local specifics, chances are you won't get much locally targeted traffic out of it.

Good point. Like 'Present' and 'Gift' right?

Well, I was actually thinking more on the lines of shipping. Is this often a factor with the merchants have limited shipping areas?

I mean if you see keywords for your widgets like this:

"widgets in new york"
"widget services tri-state area"
"southern california widget delivery"

Along those lines.

Figure out what your target market will be, then cater to that.
