Pop-ups hit a new low.

Pop-up window runs away from the mouse!

I couldn't believe getting this one at ABCNews.com! I clicked on a link for a news story and an annoying popup immediately opened.

As usual, I went to close it even before the content loaded. AND IT RAN FROM ME!

Now, the developer in me says "what a cool effect" while the user in me is seriously annoyed - to the point that I'll avoid ABC's Web site if they don't crack down on such techniques.

I had to do a Control W to get the darn thing to close. Not that difficult, but does your average surfer know how to?

And it's not from some sleazy spyware program installed on my disk. I check for those daily.

grrrr....

Hello CC

I had a look for what you were talking about as it intreged me. If you wait long enough it comes to rest in the middle of your screen. I think they have just used some dhtml to get the thing swirling round.

Annoying none the less, i hate popups me!

Yes, I'm an impatient one! I am happy to know however that this isn't some insidious new technique that will stalk us all over the Web.

Thank God for Opera's "Refuse pop-up windows" option...

... But how does that respond to the (very rare) functional pop-ups (eg Paypal's window).

have u guys tried netcaptor? if not u should check it out, i made the switch about a year ago and cant imagine going back to IE..its keeps multiple IE windows in 1 window with tabs, so popups dont bother you, they open in another tab, you close them when u feel like it..it also has a no popup mode, but i have never used so i cant say how well that works.. check it out..

Jesus i sound like a netcaptor salesman heh..

Quad & Chris,
Easy - just go to file - quick preferences - accept pop-up windows. Just hit the one menu selection and all popups are back and with one menu select they are gone again! (no dialog box, etc. - just a menu selection)

Mozilla also has an anti-popup feature.

The one I hate is the pop up that triggers another pop up (same one) when you close it.. then when you close that, and that , and that... I think you get the idea.

bad people :(
