Idiotic dhtml adverts

Banner advertising is annoying enough but I've noticed on more and more sites these dhtml adverts that cover the whole page momentarily, zoom around, cover up bits of copy so you can't see what you're reading - are site owners deliberately trying to drive people away? I've stopped going to a couple of sites that use them.

When are site-owners going to realise that irritating potential customers until they go away is never going to sell products?

I couldn't agree more. I classify those as "shake down" ads because they are, IMO, intended to do just that... forcibly extract something, whether it's a click or just an impression, from the visitor.

If a site owner is going to use them, they'd better be A) a free site with something a user REALLY wants and has difficulty finding elsewhere, or B) a site that only expects the user to return infrequently (when they forget which site abused them).

Not only are they starting to pop up more often (even on the esteemed search engines and directories), they are starting to rapidly blink and strobe in ugly colors.

As if we didn't have enough "Ad Nauseum". (pun intended).

Can we coin a new term; "seizure ads"?

I kinda like them, as long as they are quick and do NOT cover any part of the content after about 3 seconds. The ones that make you click "close" everytime make me want to leave a site forever. The quick "shows" are ok, once in a while. If evey site did it everyday, it would be horrible.

By all means...........I think "seizure ads" says it all.

Good one :)

I actually ran a dhtml ad on one of my free sites, which shook the page as something dropped in and then stayed there (luckily not covering any of my copy). The bit that amused me was watching the number of page views on the site actually increase slightly - I'm guessing some people tried to get it to do it again!

I hate these kinds of ads and tend to avoid sites which show them. Forever.
