Just wondering if anyone has any information on conversion rates / click through for Amazon.

I have been looking around for a while and signed up with Amazon today and was mildly impressed (Im hard to please:) ) with the ease of use especially the fact you can tailor the ads.

Seems like it could be a good money generator, well hopefully will pay for the server anyway...

I've had hard luck with amazon. Granted my site is about a topic you might not think "i need a book on that" but on my homepage I had a very visible, very "click me" ad for a book on my topic. I got decent click throughs but I've had only 1 sale in 2 months. And, that sale was for a book I wasn't even advertising, with the commission being only 5%, my reward was only 28 cents!

For me, text links to items I review work by far the best--conversion rate of 5 to 20%. This is for books, though, on a niche subject site.

Conversions for banners or keyword-generated selections are likely to be lower.

Keep testing. I've found some categories to work better with text and some work better with the dumb "buy now" iframe advert.

Videogames is a hard niche ... I'd assume conversions would run around 1-2% for that.

Bear in mind that the conversion rate may fall later, when cancelled customer orders/items out of stock, are calculated by Amazon.

longen, a good point. Calculate your conversion on the basis of what ships--and shows up under Earnings--not on the basis of Orders....

Two things I've learned:
1. give it time... at least 6 months before expecting many sales

2. offer a wide selection of titles, 80-100 minimum. I've got pages with one or two highly-targeted books, and they are absolute failures. I've got pages -linked to more pages- offering 110 books on a wide subject, and sell about 200 month.

These are just my own observations.

I've heard the gaming category is terrible, but have no real experience.
