Hi all,

I run a few community web sites and I want to hire a sales person. What should I offer them? A commission is the obvious one. If so at what percentage?

I'm just looking to get a few part time sales peoplepeople, and I want to be fair in what I offer them.

Thanks..

Dan

Hi Dan, and welcome.

Much depends on the type of site and $-range of ads, but I think the range is likely to be 30-50% commission for "general business" outside ad reps. That's just a guess-timate, but I have some minor experience in this. (I've always split 50/50, but the one I used did ALL the work and was knowledgeable about the market prior to entering into an arrangement with me.)

Start them at 20% commission

Once that have sold over $20,000 in the same year raise them to 25% commission

Once that have sold over $40,000 in the same year raise them to 30% commission

Once that have sold over $60,000 in the same year raise them to 35% commission

Once that have sold over $80,000 in the same year raise them to 40% commission

Once that have sold over $100,000 in the same year raise them to 45% commission and add a $10,000 bonus for each additional $100,000 sold.

Second year start them at the percent they ended at and adjust accordingly throughout the year.

I have found that a 50/50 split works well, especially if they are doing the majority of the work. They will feel more motivated if dont think they are getting a raw deal. If its a sales position for something like a job site, then I would go as high as 80%, since there is literally no work involved on my part, then I feel comfortable taking less of a take and keeping them motivated.
