Before you even begin to start learning about the affiliate marketing world, best programs, best ways, etc. I would suggest picking a good niche to start with. It should be something that interests you, as you are going to spend a lot of time focusing on that , writing about it, etc. The worst way to start is just go with something that you think will bring you money but not interests you at all, it will take a toll after. Im telling you this because when you start , one of the most important things is not to get your head into many different niches. You will never finish one project and it will be very difficult. So as i already said, Pick a niche, learn about it, what costumers are looking for, what are the best products/services in this niche out there etc etc.
@Bikerdad. I'm assuming that you are interested in running affiliate offers on your site or through some other media. If you are absolutely new to the game, I suggest starting our with Commission Junction. I would be more than happy to help you get started.
@Kate, Sitepoint puts out a lot of good affiliate marketing related books.

Global spending on prescription drugs in 2012 is expected to exceed $1 trillion – one of the largest industries on Earth.
Currently only 0.3% of transactions are online - this is growing exponentially and will become one of the largest affiliate markets online.
A few years ago is was very dodgy - but it has changed. Remote consultation is legal in the EU and legitimate companies like ours have moved in. There are only a handful of affiliate programs that are regulated, using registered pharmacies and providing customers with the service that is required. This is important. You do not want to associate with anyone dodgy.
From an SEO perspective Europe is the market with the most potential – over $300 billion is spent on pharmaceutical products each year across 14 countries in 10 languages.
My suggestion to you is to build your business - then translate like crazy into the European languages which have much less SEO competition.
All the best!
