Please Please forgive me for the stupid question, but I'm only a newbie. Please don't kill me.

Is it ok to purchase keywords and use the direct affiliate URL to the affiliate site? Is this against policy or illegal? Again please forgive me, I'm just asking because I don't know.

In other words, let's say I signed up with an adult affiliate program that pays me 50% new signup and 50% recurring. So they give me an affiliated URL, i.e. www.sex.com/aff=111. Now let's say I use overture's keyword service and buy the keyword "sex" and link it directly to the affiliate URL, www.sex.com/aff=111.

Does what I'm asking even make sense, or am I just totally lost. Please don't kill me.

Don't worry, nobody's gonna kill you...

Almost everyone promoting affiliate products with PPC ads is doing what you just described... I just don't think overture allows direct links to affiliate programs (maybe I am wrong)

Direct-to-merchant PPC has been a very popular method of affiliate sales for a couple of years now. (Not that I've ever dipped my toe in the water).

You'll need to read up - or ask around - about how Google Adwords has recently changed its policies so that only one PPC advert can point to an individual page. This has led, I gather, to PPC affiliates setting up their own intermediate pages to click through to before clicking on to the merchant.

Someone who actually does this kind of PPC can fill you in much better than I can.

Yes, you can use the affiliate links in Google for generic keywords. Most of merchants prohibit affiliates from using trademarked terms (such as brands or sitename). If you have the same generic keywords as the target merchants, you will have to compete with your own merchants for the position in Google under New Google Policy.

If the merchants do not have the keywords, then you are fine.

If the merchants have the keywords, but you have higher CTR x CPC, then you are fine.

If you use your own landing pages for your PPC campaign on YOUR site and use it as a display URL, then you are fine.
