Looking for advice on best way to advertise

We have a website that sells a lot of small niche items. Advertising so far has been a challenge. While our profit margins are high, most of the items are very low price so we're only netting $1-$3 per sale before advertising.

I'm trying to explore what options we have. Have tried Adsense but have not been very successful. I would ideally like to have an affiliate marketing approach where we only pay when a sale is made, but I'm afraid with our thin payouts we really wouldn't be too appealing to affiliates.

Any ideas on what kind of approach to take?

One idea would be to do a strong SEO campaign and create comparison pages for the niche products to show up in the SE's. This will be an exhaustive effort, but worth the pain if you're in it for the long haul.

Work on some SEO for your sites and then turn to affiliate marketing approaches. Through driving more traffic to your site, you will find that any affiliate marketing efforts will be more successful.
