Does anyone have any experienced of what criteria are generally required for affiliate applications to be successful, for example, amount of traffic, relevancy etc?

The only consistent requirement that I have seen is to have a web site. Apart from that read each network's operating agreement.

It differs by industry and program. It's more important, however, to pick a program where you're most likely to be able to convert your traffic with. Carefully consider where your traffic is in the buying cycle and what specifically they'd demand.
