I have two toolbars installed so the height is reduced. Any research link I can be referred to?
Current usage from visits on the site..
1- 1024x768 21.5%
2- 1280x800 19.9%
3- 1280x1024 10.2%
4- 1440x900 10.1%
5- 1680x1050 7.5%
6- unknown 4.9%
7- 1920x1200 3.8%
8- 1366x768 2.7%
9- 1152x864 2.1%
10- 320x396 2.0%
Well I take it you're interested in "above the fold" real estate for a given resolution.
What I do (as I'm designing on a widescreen at 1920x1200) is have a background jpeg that I've created (displayed on my desktop). The jpeg is 1920x1200 but it has various rectangle outlines which depict different dimensions, such as 1024x768.
So I just open my test page in firefox or IE and then resize the browser to "cover up" the rectangle on my desktop. That way, I can now "see" the site as a user would see it at 1024x768 (provided she's viewing it full-screen on her 1024x768 monitor).
Then again, you mentioned toolbars, so perhaps you're interested in what's the average height/width of real estate, given one's browser chrome. I find that to be a rather difficult issue to quantify and don't think much about. But I guess you could "add on" something like Google's custom toolbar to your browser to get a feel for possible "maximum" real estate above the fold.
Do many people keep those "vertical column" history/favorites bars on their IE browser? I've used them only temporarily when looking for surfing sites of yesterday. But I've wondered if many people actually leave those bars open all the time. If so, that might introduce horizontal scrolling on many sites. Any thoughts?
Hope that helps,
Gene
