Lately I find myself thinking more and more about cookie based tracking and what could be done to make this part of the business better and more bullet-proof.

For example, Linkshare is using non cookie-based tracking that they claim is better than cookie based. Is it?

I wonder what other networks are doing in order to improve the tracking as cookies are becoming more and more vulnerable to various software products (antivirus, antispyware) and even browsers. Privacy has been emphasized a lot, or even over-emphasized and people are simply scared of cookies so they over-react and "kill" our chance to get paid for sales we legitimately brought in. This is especially an issue for those that are very active in paid search as the time has become difficult and any lost sale counts more then ever.

And it is not just about user side. It is also about pixel based tracking that so many times gets overridden by some update that advertisers' web team has implemented, but they somehow forgot about CJ's or Google Affiliate Network's pixel.
Or, a pixel was on "so and so" page but not the other one.

Yet and after all, I have a feeling that (most) networks are quite dormant about this and that they behave almost like nothing but cookies can be used for tracking.

What do you think about this?

Shouldn't we create a constant pressure onto networks and demand better tracking platform?

Which networks you consider as best from that tracking perspective?

We cannot count on advertisers as this sale loss is somewhat working for them as they get their sale through anyway.

Finally, it's in any affiliate network's bet interest to work on this as they get paid based on our sales.

With all the shrinking margins, it's time for action, more then ever!

Are there any affiliate platforms that track via a few different methods to be sure things are tracked properly( sessions, cookies, email address)? I don't work with the big networks so I'm not sure how the bigger networks track to be accurate.

I have heard of and seen complaints of smaller programs overwriting cookies with their own. Don't these people know that eventually the word will get out that they are shaving and lead them to a lot most lost sales in the future than the few sales gained right now?
