Should I setup campaigns say only on google adwords and focus my PPC efforts there and try to get it profiting, or start out with yahoo adcenter and msn adcenter as well?

I also want to try myspace / facebook and youtube advertising..

Thanks.

The key thing with most types of online is testing and tracking. Test everything & track everything, identify who gives you the best ROI and spend more money with them.

Start with Google, Yahoo & Msn then move onto the smaller websites.

Start with Google if you want traffic to test what phrases work best etc - start with msn if you want a high(er) conversion rate

Have you thought about contacting key sites and offering some % to place more integrated ads on their sites for a month? I've done this with a few sites and it's been the best advertising option I've done.

Also - sending out press releases is very cheap - its luck if you get noticed somewhere but it's a cheap way to blast a message and at least you might get a dozen blogs writing about you - which will help seo.

Put it on black at the roulette wheel... seriously though, if you only have $1,000 to invest a business or in marketing a business you need to do something else. What are you trying to market? Might be cheaper / easier to do organic SEO... hand submit to some of the better directories, buy some blog posts, pay other bloggers to review your site / product etc. Or it may make sense for you to get some signs printed up and walk around town with them. You should be able to survive 8 months worth of no returns when starting a business or marketing campaign (of course we all want faster returns). You need to hope for the best and optimize for it, but be prepared for the worst (what if I'm throwing this money away or getting a very low ROI for a while while optimizing everything?) Please don't take my feedback the wrong way - I just don't want to see anyone get hurt and I very much like hearing success stories!

Agree with others - trial and error. Also MORE importantly is trial and error with different ad variations.

I have some ads that work better with some keywords on adsense than others. I have some ads that get more clicks but turn into less conversions/memberships so it is totally trial and error and it will take time. I'd say it might take 3 months and lots of variations to really nail it. Spend $500 on trial and error and your next $500 turn off all those that did not work well and invest in those that did.

I start most of my PPC / CPM marketing plan with around 250$. Every time I draw up some ideas and get to testing I think 250$ is enough to test conversion rates over several websites.

After you find what works for you and let me stress its an ever on going job use the rest of your budget to get the sales rolling in.

I like Facebook ads, as their ads have a small pic which is great for showing off a product.

As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
