I was considering placing fastclicks or burst media on my site. I hear they have pay per impression ads. Does anyone know what they pay approx per 1000 impressions?

You can't say with any certainly. It depends on the campaign (the group of ads that shows), and how much the advertisers are willing to pay. It can be as high as $2 or as low as .10 cents per 1000 impressions. As of right now, Burst Media has the higher CPM rates, but you get a smaller cut (50%) of everything they make, while Fastclick, though they have lower CPM rates, gives you a 65% cut. I've used both, and I prefer Fastclick -- they pay monthly, and their CP interface are easier and more convenient. I would suggest signing up with both, then figuring out who pays better/works better for you.

Is that mostly pop-ups or are you getting CPM rates on regular banners from Burst and Fastclick?

webmastertexas has good advice. If you DO want to use that kind of network, sign up for both and use one as the default for the other. The problem with both of them is that they give you a lot of default ads. By using one as a default for the other, you cut down on ad wastage.

One bad thing about Burst is they requisition a cetain percentage of your ads for their own personal use. I wouldn't mind but their personal use invloves slapping some really ugly banners on your site (for surveys or to advertise the network). For a media company, they sure went on the cheap to get those made!

Burst Media, Casale Media, and Fastclick are three of the more popular banner advertisers. With all three, pop-ups pay more, because they're supremely annoying, but they do pay a lot more (usually twice/three times as much as regular banners). Fastclick also offers interstatials, invue ads, and a host of others. Casale is the most limited -- they have 4 ad sizes as I can recall, and they are notorious for having defaults -- over 60/70% in my experience.

So yes, you should definitely sign up with all three, then use them in what people call "a chain" -- i.e. set one of them as your primary, then a second one as your default, and the third as your second default. This way, you'll never get defaults, and every time one network runs out of banners to show on your site, it'll show your default ads instead. This way you'll always get paid for impressions, and won't be showing PSAs (public service annoucements that doesn't pay you anything).

If you have enough traffic, you should be able to get in with all three relatively simple. If you have A LOT of traffic, you might be able to get into Tribal Fusion. I'd recommend signing up for all four and see who takes you.
