'Experienced' Web Visitors Vs 'Less Experienced' Users and Ad Clicks

Do sites aimed at more technical web surfers make less money?

It is generally assumed (or is it?) that web sites targeted at less 'sophisticated' (as I believe advertisers put it) users will earn more money than sites aimed at users with more web, or general IT experience. The idea being that experience web users are too wily and cynical to click on web advertising.

But is this really the case?

Sure, perhaps the people who regularly frequent WW are less likely to accidentally click on a web advert. But we know that this kind of behaviour doesn't pay off in the long term anyway. But if a site's content is well targeted, and therefore so is the advertising, surely it would produce more targeted and perhaps even more highly paying clickthroughs?

After all, isn't the ideal situation one where a user clicks on an advert, in the full knowledge that it is an advert, with the intent of potentially spending money at the other end?

Or is it really a quantity versus quality issue at all?

Any thoughts?

There was a long discussion on new vs. experienced website visitors and adsense quite recently which may be of interest:
