I've been reading the last six months worth of posts and trying to picture a big marketing operation. When people say that they have 100s of sites ... does this mean that they have 100s of domain names, each one of which is hosted separately? Or is there one host, to which the other domains are forwarded, maybe with masking ...

I have one site that generates about $4 a day ... but have thought about starting a second ...

How long does it take you to make the $4? I would try to get more out of your existing site first.

Many people take a core model and then spin off sites that either directly or indirectly compete. They just have a different URL and probably different look.

It all depends on what you have retained after 6 months ;-)

This is just a guess, but I think when people say they have 100s of sites, they actually do have 100s of sites -- some are on their own domain, others under an existing domain. But because the site have different themes/caters to something different from their other sites, it's considered, and rightly, a "new site".

As for making $4/day, you should put some effort into getting it to make more for you. That's too small of an amount to abandon it now and start something else. Remember that once you start another site, you have to take time out to set it up, work on it, to get it up to "snuff". I'd work on the site you have now, get it making you decent change, then start no the second site.

There's no hurry. The Internet isn't going anywhere. :)

Your $4 site is a start. You can put more effort into it, or start with a new one. You'll have to weight in if the time/effort spent in one operation is worth more than the other.

I have 2 sites that are basically dead in the water. They've managed to pull in about 80 cents a day from adsense. It's a pretty pathetic sum, but I've had them up for 3 months, that's close to $100. Should I drop them? my personal pride and trying to 'clean up the house' tells me I should, the money comes trickling in tells me otherwise. Of course, I shouldn't be admitting to basically littering the net... :)

On the topic of 100s of domains and hosting, you do not need to have hundreds of different hosts but you do need to spread them around a bit and not interlink all of them. Apparently Google takes a dim view of 100s of sites on the same IP address, with same domain owner all interlinking. All my sites are currently on same server and have no problem but then again my current sites are obviously not set up as a farm, 100% clean and are not all competing for same serp :O)
