How Do They Do That?

Ok, here is one for a wiser head than my own......how do programs track sales? It is obvious that the people behind these programs are promoting their own affiliate links, but when a "member" of their multi-tier program clicks through one of their affiliate links and thus leaves the site HOW IS THE SALE TRACKED/RECORDED?

I have asked this question many times on various sites on the internet, and nobody has been able to give me an answer......any takers?

Cookies...

When I look at the links, the links to the individual merchants include a MPM_ID variable, which look like it belongs to the mall owner. I assume you get assigned a number when you set up your own mall. Then as people click on your link to that merchant, they are cookied with the MPM_ID (yours) and it stays with them, assuming they don't click on another mall owners' ads. When they check out, they know which mall own referred the customer.

Pretty sure that how it works for them (and most all other affiliate/merchant programs)
