--- Question #1:
Is it possible to monetize on some banners in a desktop application in 2008 ?
--- Question #2:
WHO should/could we approach to run and pay for some banners in our application ?
---

As you already know, everyday the line between the web and the desktop is bluring further and further. One of the many effects that we'll start to feel in the next years is the need for the desktop application developers to catch up with the internet advertisement world. We (as I'm one of them) will look forward to you, 'webmasters' of the world, to teach us how to play the game, to share your expertise.

Why ? Because the Ad Supported Software will make a come back in the next years. Microsoft is working on some concept and is already trying the model for a free Office version completely supported by ads! .. ever tried the 'Windows Live Mail Desktop' application ? it's ad supported too.

So, do you guys think I should try that model with one of my application ? (it's and online backup application BTW)

Please do me a favor and before replying make sure you know the difference between ADWARE and 'Ad Supported Application'. Let's not fight over the definition and/or if it's the same and so pretty lame and immoral.

I hope you guys don't care giving me a hint or two on how I could do this and with which ad provider/network that would be possible or the best.

NOTE: The application will run for about 30 minutes everyday (so 30 mins of banners switching at every X(?) seconds). It will run at the top of the screen (screen wide, about 2 inches high) will reserve this screen space so that it doesn't get under OR over the other desktop applications used by the user for the time it runs. After the ~30 min, the application just disappear.

Thanks!

I could have sworn that this has been used often in the past from free ISP, to free software and I really don't see these apps out there anymore. Either these apps got bought out by the big boys, or they lost their shirts.

If you have good contacts, or a strong will to hear " we'll get back to you on that" then I'm sure you could approach any and all networks with this idea.

As far as how to do it, I'm sure you could get it coded at one of the freelance coding sites provided you have all your specs in place. Problem would be, which ads ( private or a network) could you get to work with you. Do you feel like selling ads?

BTW, welcome to WebmasterWorld.
