Just curious to know how you ended up with that many sites. 20 is just an arbritrary number though. Do you develop a site a week or something? I hear of people owning 100s of sites - how long does it takes to get to that point/build each one? are they single page wonders or mini sites with 10 pages or so each, or big shopping portals?

I have been building a LOT of sites. 50+ so far this month. And yes, they are all somewhat small.

Hi Procyon,

can you define 'somewhat small'?

and what were the considerations you put forth regarding building them all (or in blocks) under a bigger site(s)? this would surely help with link development?

Hi rfung,

My 'handcrafted' sites are often 1-4 pages. Sites generated through other means range from 1-100 pages on average.

I have a few main sites that make up 90% of my monthly affiliate revenue. I have about 100 other domains that send the other 10%.

Most of the domains are for 1 vertical, have similar content, and are geo-targetted.

You will find your time is better spent on the few sites making 90% of your revenue.

Question for the guys with more than 10 sites (I bow to your greatness!):

Are your smaller sites related to your main site? I have a movie site, and invariably I end up doing smaller sites with movie themes. Do you guys branch out into other subjects, or stay within the subject you started with?

webmastertexas:

I can tell you that my 4 websites are all in different topics. They do share a lot of the layout and codebase though.

Most of my sites are in 1 vertical. I have a handful in other verticals. I only make good money in 2 of the verticals I am in.

I use to think if I could make money in mortgage loans, why couldn't I make money promoting credit repair? Well unfortunately there are only 24 hours in a day, and it's impossible to be an expert in more than a few different fields. Needless to say, I'm refocusing my time and energy on the sites that are already making me money.

@growingdigital

Please define the concept of "vertical". I have never heard of it before.

Vertical is synonymous with Industry/Category. It's short for vertical market. For example: the Automotive vertical, the Insurance vertical etc.

If you count my blogs (they make me money so I do), I'm probably getting close to that 20 mark. I do purely original content sites so it's definitely taken some time to get there. A big part of it is just enjoying researching and writing about new things. I continue to work on the old ones when the mood strikes, but I usually have a new site in the works at any given time.

I have about ten right now, but currently have felt the urge to make many, many more. It goes in waves, you know.
Why? Why not. What else is there to do? Perhaps I should get out more. :)
