Looking for ideas to further monetize high traffic site.

I've been asked to come up with ideas to increase profit potential of a site I manage. The website receives an average of 250,000 page views per month from people seeking downloadable media and the powers that be think there are certainly ways to capitalize on that traffic, above and beyond the sales generated through the site.

So my questions are...

1) What are some things you've done to increase your site's profitability? We already do Adsense and it really doesn't bring home the bacon.
2) Are there programs similar to Adsense but more profitable?
3) Is 250,000 page views even good? Is this number attractive to advertisers?
4) If so, are there companies out there who specialize in paid ad placement on sites like mine? If so, who are they?

I'm looking for creative ideas. I'm willing to experiment with anything really.

I guess it kind of depends on the media. If for example it is a sports site about a certain league or team, then selling merchandise relating to this would be a no brainer. If the site was a DIY home improvement site, then selling tolls for the DIYer would work.

No 250K page view per month really isn't that much.

Best thing you can do and tell your bosses you can do is experiment and find what works best for your site.
