Selling ads and rates

I know there are several different factors to consider but I would like to ask the more experienced webmasters some quotes on selling ads (even if the range is huge)

What would one charge for an ad that ran for a week or month-flat rate:

Type of ad: consumer electronics
Highly targetted traffic ranging to 3,500 uniques/day

Please don't rip my head off with this question :)

hi georgiek50,
Are you able to give a bit more information? specifically:

- Size of ad-unit
- Location of ad-unit, eg, top left, or in the middle of page content, or at the bottom of pages etc
- approx number of page views (weekly/monthly)
- site context, (eg, product review site, discussion forum, news site, etc)

Thanks :)
Jason

Hi Jason,

I guess the person is waiting for a range of different prices so I don't know exactly how big the ad unit will be (I suppose the larger the ad, the highter the price I should ask) and I'm sure an above the fold in a visible location will be requested

As far as the other stats:
~220,000 pages/month
content includes: news, reviews, and discussion...not a strictly "come and buy website"

I'm just curious about the different ranges .so I can offer a price, we can try the ad unit for say a week, and if they are happy set a longer duration of placement

I would advise looking at any competition and finding out what they charge, if you can find that info you will at least have a guideline.

You may also want to create a media kit with fixed ad rates etc.

You may need to test the waters, why not ask them what their budget is and try and create something around that.

Act as if you sell ads a lot and offer them a special price if they sign now, remember most ad prices are heavily negotatiated do start with a high rate and offer a discount.

depending on ad size and location, as well as other factors, I would suggest somewhere between $2 and $20 CPM.

Weekly amount:
220,000 total impressions / 30 days in a month = 7333 impressions per day.
7333 * 7 (days in a week) = 51333 total impressions per week.
Divide 51333 by 1000, give you 51.3 CPM blocks.

Multiply your dollar CPM rate by 51.3 to give you the weekly amount.

Add 20-40% on top of this, and use that as your published "cost per week" figure. This extra 20-40% markup give you space for negotiating with advertisers, and offering discounts, special promotions etc.

Also note that ad's displayed on the product review pages are worth the most because the user is reading, possibly with the intention of making a purchase, whereas on a discussion page like in a forum they may not be seeking opinions on which product to purchase, but having a general chat etc.

Also pay attention to the comment made by Visit Thailand about looking to see what competing sites are selling their ad space for.
