in the past I've dealt only with Adsense with great results. Now I want to expand to private ad space.

Website gets about 190,000 uniques a month and a millino pagviews a month.

How do I know what's fair to charge for pricing? Look at Adsense earnings and charge a fraction of that?

Depends on what business you're in.

Just to give you an example.... my sister is studying law school. She joined a group which makes social events and so on for some of the other students on the university. They have a website and some advertisers for it. Advertisers spend about 100.000$ a year on it. Daily visits are around 50-100.

Figure it out. There's alot more to be earned than silly adsense income...

Adsense should give you a minimum-rate below which you will not accept anything. After all, why accept something which pays less than a copy-paste bit of code?

The right price point for you will be whatever the market can bear. If you can fill all your space at Adsense x2 on monthly runs, then next month you increase your rates to x3 on monthly runs, and x2.5 for two-monthly runs, in this way continually building in a longer-period discount for existing advertisers who find your site is working.

When you say Adsense should be a minimum... Do you mean what I currently earn should be the lowest price to charge for each private advertisor? Or for all the ad space i'm offering together?

Whatever you get from AdSense on a CPM or CPC should be the absolute minimum you get from direct ads. Figure Google takes a chunk so the advertiser is paying more than what you are getting. If you go direct, you have to handle the billing, communications, etc...so it will take more time.

As this is all new to me...

How do I handle managing of CPM or CPC ads? I was thinkng I'd be charging per month for different ad sizes so it would be easy... just upload their ads to my site.
