Slick affiliate program offer

My current website deals with a niche that's not very profitable for advertising, as the profit margins for the retailers are slim.

While searching through CJ today, I found an advertiser that paid $1 for every person who registers at their site. The site is a niche-related auction site, and is #1 for the niche.

$1 per registration sounded great, until I played with their site for a bit (I'm already registered with them, so I had to delete all cookies from their site).

A visitor doesn't have to be registered to search all of the auctions. The only requirement for someone to register is if that person wants to buy or sell a widget on the site, or if the visitor wants to utilize the advanced search features.

From their standpoint, the offer makes sense: they only pay for active customers, and get the tire-kickers for free (who might visit again, after the affiliate cookies have expired).

This was just another example of why I need to really do my homework on AM, and read as much as I can on this forum and others.

Right. Many programs like to use affiliates for free branding and marketing. Sounds like that's what these guys are doing.

Thanks for the reply, Eljefe3.

I thought I'd at least give it a try, so I put the banners across my site yesterday afternoon at 5 pm.

CJ shows that, from that time until midnight, there were 14,162 impressions, 70 clicks, and no sales (registrations).

The auction site must get something from having people register, or they wouldn't pay $1 per. Do you or anyone else here think it would be a worthwhile idea to contact them and suggest that the links from their ads go straight to the registration page?
