New Affiliate Blues

I've been tinkering with the idea of affiliate marketing for some time. I just attended a small meeting where an affiliate presentation was done that sparked my interest again. I think when I return from NYC next week I'm going to give it a crack. (I'd set up one ebook program a while ago, but as I was setting up the pages the merchant emails me to say they won't accept traffic generated from PPC, so I kind of let it lapse).

My initial thoughts are:
- I'm going to use some of the ranking power of my current white hat sites for some of the programs.
- for the rest, I'm going to use PPC. I don't believe there's any magic to PPC above and beyond what I already do for my current PPC programs. Targetted ads, very refined keywords, targetted landing pages, etc.
- I'm going looking for programs initially in the recreational/leisure area as I suspect there's discretionary cash there.
- in addition, I'm going to look for programs that pay based on lead generation instead of a sale, assuming that these may be easier to generate.
- for my landing pages, I'm going to try and put up somewhat useful information. Maybe a comparison of different options, something like that.

Only thing I can see that might be a problem would be to find programs in your chosen category that pay per lead. All the programs that I know of pay per sale as the conversion ratio in this area is quite low, so the merchants don't want to pay on a lead basis.
