Why doesn't the first visitor ever buy

With a 1% conversion rate

My conversion rate averages around 1%. However, every time I start a new campaign it takes 90, 100, or even 130 visitors before I make a sale.

By the law of averages it seems that sooner or later the first visitor should buy on a campaign.

But no, they never do. Nor the first 10, 20, or 50.

I know it is unlikely, but have you ever had the first visitor convert?

When I start a new site or new ppc campaign, it seems the conversions are high at the beginning, then start to fall off as time goes by.

Sometimes the first 6 buy, then the next 300 don't.

This is how it is.

The conversion rate will depend on many factors:

Un-controllable factors:

1. The market, if the market is very competitive, the users will have many options, so they may delay the purchase or they may evaluate you and then go for purchase.

2. The type of product you are selling. If the product demands careful thinking before buying people may delay the buying process. Consider screensaver download Vs debt consolidation.

3. Seasonal trends. Many products go hand in hand with season. You will not have good market all year round. Try selling "Christmas" products now.

4. Use behavior.

Controllable factors:

1. Is your PPC/website is targeted to you product.
2. Are you using correct keywords?
3. Is your adcopy good?
4. Is your registration/request form long?
5. length of buying cycle.

You have to optimize your ppc/website on the factors you can control.

Maybe the first 100 are your competitors checking out your website? ;) (Maybe not.)

I hope they arrived by natural search and not PPC ;)

I recently ran a PPC campaign through Google that got 1 impression, 1 click ($0.06) and 1 conversion bringing in $20 on the first day it went live! I was excited initially but the campaign unfortunately is hard to scale up and gets very few searches. I haven't made a cent since, spent about $5. Been a month.

On an average 1% CTR the chances aren't even that anyone will buy until you have crossed the hundred clicks point. Before you reach 100 clicks, the chances that anyone will click are below even.
