Income is a function of the qualities of a domain, the quantity of quality domains that you hold, the advertiser revenue stream associated with the domain parking (Overture feed, Google feed, 2d and 3rd tier feeds) and the revenue share/split. Regarding the domain names, themselves, income is a function of many factors:

• Is it a likely type-in (BigCityName.tld, PopularWord.tld)
  
• How popular is the type-in word/domain?
  
• What is the PPC value of traffic to the type-in domain? (Loans versus child games versus silly pictures)
  
• How likely is the traffic to convert? (Loans.tld versus MiamiHomeLoan.tld)
  

Those are a few factors, off the top of my head, and to answer your question - yes there are people/companies that make quite a lot of money off of direct navigation traffic.
