Non-AdSense / Non-Yahoo Pay Per Click for tech sites?

Adsense ad targeting has grown worse and worse for our .net software developer site. The ad inventory for our topic must also be low as we often get overtaken by the same ad shown across the site for hours at a time.

Of course, yahoo and kanoodle are a joke.

Is there anything out there that is a pay per view or pay per click model that is better targeted to our sector?

Often times, our visitors aren't in a position to make a direct purchase. So, pay per sale models don't work well for us.

We could build our own advertisement management system to sell space on specific urls. Has anyone done this? I'm not confident in a "if you build it they will come" approach.

You should try out Chitika. They are pretty good in Tech and tech-related products. Also, they allow you to set your own keywords. So that will help with targeting in your case.
