I have advertisers that would like to advertise on a site, and instead of going through an ad network that would take half of the ad sale, I want to go it alone.

I have heard of Doubleclick DART and PHP ad nuke and some other programs. What does anyone recommend? What software is free or has limited cost and easy to use? Help out a newcomer.

Free - Phpadsnew, Max Media Manager, Adcycle, Adbutler
Pro - Advertpro, Zedo Ad Server, Accipiter
Enterprise - Atlas DMT, Doubleclick DART, Thruport's Adjuggler, 24/7 Real Media's Open Ad Stream, FALK Ad Server

Most small and medium sites can do very well on any of the free versions. The pro versions cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month. The enterprise level systems usually cost above ten-thousand per month and above. I'd try the free ones first and move up from there as necessary.

I have been using phpadsnew for the last three years. It can be a bit quirky at times, but overall with some time and effort, it's been able to deliver effectively on what we need it to do. Good luck.

second that - it was slow for me when i was using for a big pool of banners, randomly rotating with no duplicates, but its easy to install, has decent documentation for a free product and can do most anything except pay-per-click
