difference between cost per lead and cost per sale

what is the difference between cost per lead and cost per sale?

A lead is generally considered to be something like filling out a form or application or something like that.

So, you get paid even if the customer doesn't end up converting into a sale.

A sale is exactly that, a sale (customer buys something, you get credit). :)
