There are a lot of companies that offer to get great search engine rankings for your web site. My question is... wouldn't they make more money if they just made their own affiliate sites (poker, gambling, whatever pays good) and SEO'd the hell out of them?

The fact that I am asking this is the reason that I have yet to spend money on one of these SEO services.

Any thoughts?

If it's in a competitive market, chances are these SEO's can't get you there as what you said, there's more money in it if they do it for themselves.

Doing SEO for people and running affiliate sites are two completely different types of endeavors. And going by the type of sites you mentioned, don't assume everyone involved in doing SEO is interested in getting involved with those types of markets, or going to the lengths it takes to rank in some markets.

Besides, depending on the type of business it can't always be done, for someone to run their own site. How about people who do SEO for local real estate brokers or manufacturing sites, for example? They may not want to get involved in "selling" real estate in their home town or opening a factory, and for some types of businesses there are no affiliate programs available.
