Affiliate site bandwidth volume

How much?

Hello,

Within a week or so I will have my first affiliate-program based site ready. Now, the time has come to select an appropriate hosting package.

Having no experience at all in this field, I wonder: How much bandwidth (in GB) does the average affiliate-site accumulate per month?

The amount of data you will use is directly related to what sort of content you're serving up (e.g. large image files), and how much traffic you get.

It's hard to put a set number on it. However, some of the more seasoned affiliates might have some good 'average' data.

I would think about going basic at the moment as it will take time you get many hits to your site, then after say 1 year you might decided to get an upgrade if your getting enough people to the site...

This is my rough idea, please look around the web for more ideas...

Most text-driven sites are lucky to use a few GBs. Just make sure it is easy to upgrade to higher bandwidth plans with no penalties. Also be sure the cost per additional GB is clearly stated upfront and it is not too high.

If you are making a decent amount per visitor, increases in hosting costs are covered many times over by additional income.

Unless you are serving up media files, don't worry about bandwidth. 2-5gb is more than enough. Get traffic first, then worry about bandwidth. You can switch over to something with much more space/bandwidth very quickly these days.

Johnnie:

A great way to decrease bandwidth needs is to optimize the pictures on your site. A lot of times, pictures can be compressed to 1/10th their original size, meaning you can get more visits with the same bandwidth compared to not compressing. As a bonus, your site will load faster, which is especially helpful to the customers out there who still use dialup. It's a win-win.

I know how to compress in Dreamweaver, if that's what you're using. Other progams, though, I'm not so sure about.

As for space, I agree that 5GB a month should be plenty. If you're getting that much traffic a month from a fairly small site (under 75k), you're probably well-enough off that you can afford any extra.

Conroy:

You said 2-3GB should be enough yeh?

Is that the normal you would expect to get from a Host? I think im on 40 Gig Transfer per month (if its the same thing) but it was the cheapest i could find...

Another idea could be save bandwidth by viewing your page before uploading it to your server then looking...?

I'd never go back from having a dedicated host.

79$ a month for cpanel/whm, 1.2TB of bandwidth a month, 1 gig of ram, 2.4ghz celeron. I can make as many sites as I want, and all I have to pay for is the domain :)

My largest site does about 8-10 gigs/month. However my smaller sites are lucky to do 500 megs/month.

Personally I would get at least a 20G package. You should be able to find packages for under $20/month.

Heh, how did we go from a first affiliate site to talk of terabytes? :-)

Johnnie, your primary concerns will be reliability and flexibility. And, of course, dirt cheap cost, at least until you learn the affiliate game.

By the way, good luck!
