Me too.
I have 2 more years as an undergraduate, then I'm going for my phD.
The goal has always been to work my butt off for these 2 years so that I can have a decent semi-passive income during my days at graduate school.
I'll tell you in 2 years if it is a success
It is a strange group, affiliate marketers. Many of my good friends and myself, are driven by their laziness in a way. It's like we must create a system that will allow us to loaf around and vacation all the time. This goal for automation and semi-passive income is what drives me. OTOH, we could all make a lot more money if we didn't goof off so much. :)
Someday this will be called "Affiliates Disease"
Mothers will scold their children, "If you don't start working harder, you're going to get Affiliates Disease like your uncle Joe"
"What's 'afwiates'?"
"Just do your homework"
I started out slow
no socks then
no shirt then
no pants just a bathrobe
then I hit rock bottom "LEVEL 3 Affiliates Disease"
I just work in my underware
My doctor told me I have less than 6 weeks before I reach LEVEL4
Ya you guessed it dirty underware
At present I'm tring to avoid this.
THERE IS A CURE
I have started an extreme experimental procedure. I force myself to work at least 10 minutes a day.
I'm sure if I continue this radical form of therapy, by November, I can reach my goal of working at least 27 minutes per day.
Wish me luck
And remember if you are infected, you are not alone.

all of the really successful people here will tell you that the learning curve part of their aff marketing career was an expensive, frustrating and nerve racking time.
Ah. I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who has gone through this. That others have gone through this same dark, frustrating tunnel I'm in and actually made it out the other end successful, without having to turn back around to get out of it.
I don't wear bathrobes at home, I guess I haven't made it to that level yet. But I do work on a Laptop at a desk not too far from my bed and sometimes it lures me in with my computer. Big and super soft. I guess I get the laziness bug sometimes too. Can't even sit straight up in a chair for 8hrs at a time. Perhaps I should get a lounge chair for my roof and get a tan while I'm at it. Since I started this stuff my friends have been telling me I look a lot paler then usual.
A variation of the affiliate disease I have is Obsessive Compulsive Stat Checking! Yes I know I just checked my stats 5 min. ago and there were no new sales, but there could be now!
To get to this position I've invested about $10,000 in domain names, and earned about $3,000 in domain name sales. I've spent a total of about $500 in hosting costs.
Given that this is a spare time hobby it's obvious that if I were to focus on it full time I could multiply my earnings a few times just by practicing the same techniques at a larger scale.

That's where you can talk to your merchant and have then send you emails, notices, ect of new sales, leads. That way you can find other, productive things to do with your time. Like find new programs that make you money! ;)
Yup it does ...if you make a total of $30 a day and creating another site makes you an extra $5/day your motivation to work will be very very less...but if you make say $3k a day and if each extra good ranking site adds say another $300 per day at that point you are addicted , no time to feel guilty :)
And soon I'll buy a laptop with a cellular internet connection so I can work anywhere.
Where do you pick up such a device?
Yea, it does. As Gopi said, if you were making substantially more, you would be surprised the type of motivation you could get from that.
Yeah, but you also have to take into account that if someone hasn't reached the $300/day point, they don't have a clue what it feels like. Back when I was losing money everyday, then it became $10/day, I was happier than can be. Which gave me the motivation to keep it up. The motivation should be to just focus on what you have and to build on it everyday. Even at hundreds/day, I'm always working to improve. So you should never feel satisfied.

Cingular, Sprint and T-Mobile (dunno about others) all offer GPRS connection to the web through your phone if you have the right package. It's just a matter of connecting the laptop to the cellphone and presto, instant net connection from pretty much anywhere in the US (and even abroad..). I've got such one setup, and it's a hoot to check stats while parked in your car. Get a car charger for the laptop and cellphone, and you're set! Road trip and work, all at the same time!
BTW, I'm at the uhm..$5-$10/day rate. But I see the potential that I'm willing to risk a measly $55k/yr job and go full time doing AM. (I'm just off college, and live with parents,so no real expenses). Once I get started full time, I figure I can get to $50/day in about 6 mo.
What I'd like to know is, for those big time affiliate marketers, are you always building/starting new sites, and thus your growth gets to be exponential? or are you content maintaning your current income level? Can someone estimate how much percent growth you get over whatever meaningful period is for you? over 6 months? over a year?
