Any experience out there with selling your products on Amazon? I had a guy contact us from Amazon today about being a ProMerchant.

The short story is $40 month plus 8% - but that includes the credit card processing. Also, they guarantee against fraud so theres no chargebacks.

Our products are professional grade, not homeowner grade so they are not going to be the cheapest available. I'm wondering if I'd just be wasting my time and money on Amazon.

Any comments or experience would be appreciated.

Did he approach you to sell products on Amazon.com, or to use Amazon's ecommerce technology on your site? I work for a company that does both, and they are entirely different beasts. The 8% deal sounds like what they offer when you use Amazon's technology on YOUR site.

This is to sell our products on their site. Completely intregrated into their directory of products as I understand it.

I'd be very leary. Request a try before you buy.

Homeowner/Professional grade - that's completely subjective. I've purchased some of the books I use in my daily life as a professional programmer/developer from Amazon! But I think I know what you mean. ;)

Setting up products in Amazon was the biggest PITA I've had to deal with so far. Sales are not that great, but I'm still new over there.

To date I haven't seen a dime from the sales that were processed, so you might want to look into how they pay, and when, a little closer. My products are low cost consumer items, maybe there's a cutoff of some sort.. still, I've been looking for a settlement report for a while. (Ya, ya, need to call them about that.)

In the big picture, I think it's probably worth it, as it's another avenue to expand my reach.

I mentioned earlier that 'there's no chargebacks'. Thats not true when I think about it further.

There's no chargebacks from fraud... but there's still chargebacks from people deciding they dont like the product or just dont want to pay (they say they never recieved it, etc.).

Just talking out loud here but it seems like the issue really is - is this the best use of my time.

Thanks

I do not sell on Amazon, but was approached by them. I got into a very long "learn" process with them about their requirements which were pretty strict as to shipping, especially. At the time I think they were asking 15% of gross sales. Anyway, decided not to do it because of the effort involved, and just could not see why someone looking to buy my widgets would go to Amazon to buy them.

Read the agreement carefully and see what kind of copyright permissions they may require in order to start selling products there.
