This is a fairly new area for me so please forgive if this question is niaive, but is there an accepted ratio of page impressions per visitor. I ask because advertisers seem to want 500,000+ page impression per month. Mine are running at an average of 2.5 per visitor right now and I was wondering how that rates. Ie should I be looking to increase visitors or the number of impressions achieved when they arrive. Also can someone tell me the purpose of recording hits - just curious

thanks

The average is right around three. Typically, advertisers don't want their ads to be shown to the same user over and over, so it's much easier for ad networks to sell your ad space if the number doesn't exceed the 3-5 range.

Also depends on the type of site you have. SearchEngineWorld is averaging about 7. When I throw out the tools that get used repeatidly, it averages about 3.5. While WebmasterWorld averages 16per user. If I filter out the moderators it drops to 10 to 11 depending on the day of week.

2.5 per user is what alot of the net stats say.

Totally.
If you have a strong content site, you can expect high pageviews per visitor. However, sites with many hit-and-run type visitors, such as a free-stuff site, do very well to average above 2.
