I have several pages that work and sell several that dont so I work at it and try some thing else.
Success isnt a one step programme but an on going system of developement.
Its taken a few months to buildup the link structure but i did reach the top ten and it did pay out for a quite a few months. pre-florida i was making £2000 after florida not so good.
I am looking for affiliate sites that can work that don't have too much competition. Any pointers.

That will give you a pretty good idea of where the money is at. For starters; printer ink, debt, loans, adult, pharm, gambling - basically anything where the profit margin for the merchant is large enough that they can really "cut you in".
Of course there are some others, but you get the idea. And, yes, all lucrative areas will be competetive.
My suggestion, if you don't want to compete with the "big boys" is to set up several smaller sites targeting smaller sets of keywords and products.
For example, try to get traffic on "dvd club" rather than "dvd" or "cheap printer cartridges" rather than "printer ink". If you can get 20-30 sites performing a sale or 2 per day, you should clear 5k per month. Once you get to this point, you can start going after the big dough as you will have some funding to compete.
I just saw in a promotional email from CJ that Ebay's top affiliate made $1 million in Dec and over 1.3 million in Jan. Their top 25 affiliates make over 100K per month. Not too shabby!

I think you're asking the correct question, and in the right way around. If you are interested in making money, start with where the money is, not with where your interest lies.
I'm finding that one of the biggest areas where a lot of money is being spent, is "making money on the Internet". Not only folks like you and I are interested in this subject, but there are many newbies in this field who are so eager to click on the AdSense ads, and download the eBooks just to get that million-dollar piece of advice.
Kinda cyclical: making money off of people who want to learn how to make money off of people.

Chances are that that particular affiliate is doing pay per click with Google Adwords or Overture. Just because eBay paid out a million doesn't mean that the affiliate didn't spend $800k or $900k to get it. I'm speculating on the exact number, but you get the point.
