Of course you have to balence it with the avaliability of internet jobs in the area. If there aren't alot, you may have to take what you can get.
But overall, I think at $45K, the company would be getting one heck of a deal if he has a proven track record.
If he's making almost half of what the direct marketing guy is making and only getting 25% compare to 75% of the sales -then for your company, his salary seems on par.
The job market in the U.S. is very volitile right now and you can get some very experienced dot com bust guys for $20-30/hour in some areas.
In other areas, you might not find them for under $50/hour, it really depends on their situation and the company.
We recently hired a dot com bust programmer (who's good), for $25 an hour for a six month contract as he wants to boost his resume and can't get work for what he's actually worth at present -- a win win situation.
Every hiring position is different, and even though you might be worth more, if you can't get hired at that, then you're really worth what the market will bear at that point in time.
But what can this person do for you next year? Is their SEO work ethical, will it ever get you in trouble?
What are their objectives? Will they want to go work for someone else in 6 months or a year? Do they want to become a partner in the business? Are they willing to teach their skill to someone else?
If you ask a broader range of questions, you should be able to find a "win-win" contract with this person. In any case, someone who brought in that much business for me would definitely be worth the $45k.
I know someone who helped build a US$3 million business from scratch in 12 months for someone. He left them as they offered him $100K. He has no employer any more......but many websites
I know him aswell :)
but seriously, all depends if he is a wage slave or a diy man.
not forgetting, what will he bring next year or even next month.
