How do I sell ads?

How to find advertisers, set rates, place ads?

I've been working day and night for the past couple of years to build up a bunch of websites, and now they're finally starting to show some results. I'm getting some decent traffic on some of them, I'm getting some good PageRanks, but I've only been using programs like Adsense or affiliate programs to try to scrap up some revenue.

I know that it's a bad idea to sell advertising based on PageRank, but when I'm buying an ad, that's one of the first things I look at. How do you sell advertising without having Google think you're selling PageRank and ban you?

Where do you find advertisers? I don't want to spam people who I think might be interested, but they might not be interested and think I'm a spammer.

What kind of information do you send to a company that's interested in purchasing an ad on your site?

What are the good and bad points of different types of ads? Banners? Text Ads?

Any other advices?

Hi, Peter. One suggestion for your research: search Google for "media kit" or other ad-related terms. You'll find some sites that include extensive information for potential advertisers. After you scan some of these, you'll get some ideas for creating your own presentation. Be wary of published rates, the real rates may be quite a bit lower.

Also try a "advertise here" link in an area where you have some text-link ads already. So advertisers realise they can pick the page, and see it's a plain, pr transfering links. knowledgable webmasters will understand the implications.

Depending on your sites, you might treat them individually or as a group. If you are small, a rate card with some demographics & statistics from the site might be sufficient. You can, of course, develop this into a full kit if warranted.
