I just started a website. It is directed at a niche market.
I started in March and rcvd 4,000 hits in our first week, it has grown to now avg 12,500 hits a day and growing rapidly... in the last three days avg 25,666 hits.
We have affiliates but not much action... but we are not marketing shopping as much, I primarily want to sell advertising, have all media kits and rate cards ready... but so far very little action on "advertise with us". I have heard that it be be a wise idea to hire an advertising agency on a commissions basis.
Does anyone know of an ad agency that works with websites? Or can you make any recommendations?
Appreciated...!

Hits (as markusf points out) is not the same thing as visitors. A hit is any file or graphic that is called. I have, as one example, one site that gets 1500 hits a day - which is 70 visitors for that site on average.
If you have a niche market - you are better off trying an affiliate program in that niche.
People aren't going to gamble by paying up front with a site that young. It is easy to get into an affiliate program - and then if you traffic is profitable - you will get money.
Welcome to Webmaster World!
It seems unusual that your website would generate traffic (other than your own) in the first week. It is simply not enough time to get listed in the search engines (unless you have a very high profile site with a link to you). How many of your hits are a result of your own visits to the site? Do you have external links on the Internet that point to your site? Are you advertising via conventional media to increase awareness of your website? How are visitors finding your site within the first month?

We have done quite a bit of marketing, through posts on ver popular message boards, attending events for the market and that is how it statred out that way.
If you are saying that we really will not get advertisers at such a early time for us, than I have to ask.... when? After how long should we be up before we try to get an agency to sell ads for us?
And can anyone recommend an agency?
How many UNIQUE VISITORS do you get each day and how many PAGE VIEWS do you get? Any keen advertiser is just going to laugh at you if you mention hits.
For example, a website I run has gotten 448,000 hits since 4/23/03. However, that is only 308,000 page views, 15,000 visitors, and 3,100 unique visitors. Telling an advertiser that you get 3,100 unique visitors during a period of time doesn't sound as impressive as 448,000 hits but if the advertiser knows the first thing about web advertising they won't care about the 448,000 hits.
25-30,000 unique visitors per day
500,000 banner impressions per day
(high stickiness, community site)
$500 per month, about 660,000 impressions right now per advertiser
or
$0.125 per click in lots of 2,000.
Sells well, pricing seems about right.. have 18 banner advertisers onboard now.
