I have several thousand mobile users registered on my site. I'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to sell opt-in sms advertising.

My site is a general news/current events site with a WIDE variety of readers so it doesn't target a particular niche, however, advertisers would be able to target their ads by age, gender and geographic location. The cost would be $0.10 - $0.20 per ad per receipient.

as a webmaster, would you advertise your site by sms in this way? what would be the deciding factors?

Have these users agreed to accept sms ads? That would be the first place to start would be to get their approval before spamming them.

General advertising as in "visit sitexzy - we have a great widgets", no. If the user specifically opted in to say tell me when concert tickets for some band go on sale and I was selling the tickets, then yes. Personally, the only time I'd want to receive ads by SMS is when something very specific happened, a price on something dropped to what I was willing to pay, tickets for some event went on sale.
