Hey everybody,
I just moved to a large city with over 4 million people and trying to get my business name (webdesign services) to the local businesses. Aside from Adwords, I was looking at buying/renting a list of business email accounts. A company can do a one-time blast for $1,200 and it includes over 1700 local email addresses. Now, if I just get 1-2 gigs out of that, then it would be worth it! Now, my questions are:

1.) Why haven't more people done this? Why are no people talking about this in the forums? I mean...you just need to get 1-2 jobs out of it! Next to Adwords, isn't this the best thing?

2.) Is the 1,200 price good? Are there better deals elsewhere? Locally?

3.) Has anyone actually done this before? Was it worth it?

4.) Any last minute advice before I try it?

Thanks and I look forward to your responses:)

There a few issues to consider.

1) Who is the company your getting the list from? Are they reputable? Have the people on that list ACTUALLY requested to be sent information such as yours?

2) SPAM - Even if the people "requested" to be sent information, you can bet you will end up getting some spam complaints and because you don't actually have a business relationship with them, you could end up having some people go so far as to complain to your hosting provider, the provider where your email goes (if the email they receive includes your email address), etc. If this happens, you could easily find your hosting account closed, ISP account cancelled etc.

Does it work? Sure. That's why we all get so many spam emails, email marketing works.

Is there some potential risk to you? You bet.

Thanks,
I did not post the company URL because I thought a mod would delete it.

And this is not illegal spam. It's perfectly legal. Read up on the CAN SPAM ACT at: [ftc.gov...]

On trust me, I know about the can spam act. I do a good deal of email marketing.

I'm not trying to get into a debate on what is and isn't spam.

The issue is often what "spam" is, is up to the person receiving it.

If do you get these emails from them, send out a bunch of emails to businesses with whom you have no prior business relationship, that is considered "UCE" or "Unsolicited Commercial Email". You will find hosting companies, ISPs, etc. are VERY strict on any type of UCE.

If even one person that you sent that email to decides that email is spam and treats it aggressively, you may find much of what I mentioned in my first post happen.

Just a warning.

got any proof , to back it up

You dont need any proof skunker , hell you dont even need to accept advise when given

It's probably best if you just go ahead and pay $1200 and email a whole freaking city and see what happens for yourself ..

only way you'll know for sure ..right ...

good luck with your mailing campaign nothing like throwing the dice

I would recommend direct mailing...the stamp type.

Obtain a mailing list of businesses in your area. Design an eye catching postcard with some type of offer or discount for your services. Getting your postcards printed and mailed out.

...no spam complaints from direct mail.

Oooosh......

Its a dodgy game , purchasing email lists......dont go there...

A spam complaint can ruin you - end of story.....

I , not so long ago sent out 10,000 emails from my webhosting email account......

The email addresess were from a previous business relationship...although almost identical to my current business....the company name etc is different...

I had 1 spam complaint from the posting......and my ISP suspended my account for almost half a day....until I begged them and explained to them what I had done...

They reactivated me after my explanation......but it was a lesson learnt....

And the funny thing is - I didnt regard it as Spam.....but can see an interpreation of it as being spam.....

If you value your business and online presence - NEVER SPAM.....IT COULD COST YOU DEARLY.......
