Kelly Spors answers questions from readers about entrepreneurship

Q: Just what is the secret to making a decent income by setting up a Web site on affiliate programs?

A: Joining affiliate programs is an easy way to make a few extra dollars for anyone with a Web site or blog. But making a livable salary as an affiliate often requires some real entrepreneurial skill.

entrepreneurial skill?

Search-engine results aren't as easily manipulated as in the past, and affiliates must resort to methods such as paying for search-result placement to draw traffic to their sites, says Shawn Collins

You talk about PPC as if it's what you do when you are out of options, Shawn ;) congrats on the quote in WSJ

Wendy Shepherd, 38, of Emmitsburg, Md.... ...says she earned roughly $102,000 through affiliate programs in 2005 and is on track to make "six figures" this year.

Isn't 102k already six figures?

Not much there, but it was fun to see it in the Journal. I am no doubt going to get questions about it next time I visit the inlaws.

I have to think this particular reader is doomed. Imagine having a question about Affiliate programs and going to WSJ instead of WebmasterWorld, SEW, DP, or ABW. It's also interesting that it doesn't really say anything about SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. Guess you don't need to know that.

I spoke to her for a good 90 minutes on a wide range of topics in depth, including SEO.

My "quote" about PPC was actually pared down from a much more detailed comment.

I pointed her to a big PPC player to get his story, but they never connected. She was really fixed on affiliates with content sites.

Oh well - I'd rather have a misquote in there than none at all I suppose.

Considering most wallstreet types read the journal, even a slight reference is good for the industry i guess!
