Hi all,

been a while since I posted in here. I love this place!

I'm thinking about diversifying. I have a relatively successful program at the moment, but have been researching into creating an affiliate site with a product data feed.

The thing is, I understand in concept but how does it actually work? Leave a huge open space for the data/products to fill in the middle of your site?

Aside from implementing the data feed, has anyone been successful with this type of aff marketing? I know it comes down to either SEO or ads but...well, just curious about this idea.

Thanks everyone

Many, many, many and many more people have had at least some success with this kind of aff marketing. The problems lie in duplicate content. There are loads of identical pages out there because people can't be bothered to make the feed even a little unique.

The other problem is that the competetive markets are owned by the spammers and super affiliates whilst the less competetive stuff appears over and over again.

I use datafeeds still and I do have an amount of success with them. I do however, alter the feed a fair bit to avoid the duplicate content penalties and hopefully to offer my users something slightly different.

I would say "go ahead". Feeds are free normally (unless you use cj) and are easily editable. You don't really have a lot to lose and maybe you could do something with the feed that no one else has tried.

Hi Ska,

many thanks for the reply. I've never used them before so I'm not even sure what to expect yet. I know basic html but would you say it's relatively easy to manipulate the feeds?

Also, when talking about duplicate content and the many other sites out there, are you referring to the SEO side of things? What if I were to primarily use PPC to get visitors and worry less about SEO? Your thoughts?

When you say you've had some success, understanding of course it's your experience, is this due to some "flaw" in the system of a data feed? For example, visitors all of a sudden being redirected react negatively due to disrupting the flow of purchase? Visitors phoning the merchant directly, etc.?

I'm just curious if data feeds are a good way to create a modest profit, say a couple grand a month? I know this depends on how I advertise, etc.

It seems like you're ok with feeds but not over the moon about them. True?

Thanks a lot

Sure, that is one very good way of getting traffic but bear in mind not every click equates to a sale. I fact I would bank on somewhere between 1-5 per 100 clicks possibly making a sale. It could be better, more likely it'll be worse.

When you say you've had some success,

I mean I have made a few sales per week through free organic search engine traffic. I gave up on ppc for this merchant as it was too competetive. I went back to SEOing the feed.

Personally the few feed sites I have created and SEO'ed and written unique content for have made no more than £100 per week at best. Thats just my experience, others have made a killing at it.

I had good experiences with them when I made my own. This was before they became so readily available. For me they are handy to build the initial pages but otherwise they are not much use. Too many people use them to throw up a 20000 page site in a day and then expect to be millionaires by the end of the week.

I don't use 'off the shelf' feeds anymore. I use a CMS or I write my own to suit the products I would like to promote.

Hope this helps
