decided to check where my website was in google for some keywords, #2 hey great. Then i noticed on the right hand side a list of sponsored links. And there was an ad for my website, thing is i didnt put it there. Any one know what the story is?

Is the page about a specific product or service?

Maybe it's a company which is using your page to show people how good their product is.

this is on a google search, the right hand side is where paid google adverts appear. direct link to my site and i didnt setup or pay for it!

Try clicking the link.. it may not be going to your site at all since the displayed URL is not the target URL in AdWords.

Maybe some people just use your website as a disguise because they do not have their own landing page.

i think it may be google had run out of paid adverts for the keywords and to make it look popular put in some of there own - feasible?

No that's not the case. That would work against Google. There are plenty of keywords that will yeild zero adverts.
