Hi

I run a small affiliate program for my UK based site.

I am starting to get some interest from webmasters in the US who want to join the program but I am unsure how I can pay them.

Anybody in the same boat who can point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Peter

If you are considering paying by cheque, then you will have to set up a dollar account and pay checks on that.

Otherwise small UK pound cheques will get swallowed up by the dreadful bank costs incurred in cashing them into US dollars.

To set up a dollar account is only worth doing if you are expecting a reasonable volume of transactions.

Funny thing is many US based affiliate programs only pay in US dollars not matter where you are in the world.

I've been in numerous US based schemes over the years and paid hundreds of pounds in conversion charges.

paid hundreds of pounds in conversion charges.

To get round the problems of American hegemony you can do the same thing - open a dollar account, pay the small cheques into that, then withdraw a large dollar cheque at intervals and change that into sterling

The way the bank system is loaded against you, you will find that is much more cost effective.

Peter,

Why not offer both cheque and Paypal options to your affiliates?

If you are paying by cheque (using your spelling), offer your affiliates a choice for a payment threshold. Cutting a cheque for $25 or $50 may not be desirable for your affiliates who must fork over $10-$20 in bank fees for depositing a foreign check. Add other bank fees if you are paying out in £'s. A cheque would probably be preferable to affiliates with large earnings as the bank fees are a smaller percentage.

Paypal is a very simple and convenient way to pay your affiliates. Total charges would be in the neighborhood of 4% and would be more attractive to those with lower payouts. Payments are also immediate which should appeal to your publishers.

You can cut out the middle man, and read about it here [paypal.com]

Peter,

Paypal fees are deducted from the recipients account. I am not sure what cornwall is saying about cutting out the middleman. It would make no sense for Paypal to cut themselves out of the picture.
