Do people still sign up for these things or have they slipped into the psychological abyss with banner ads?

Last time I did a test on a site, 0 response rate out of a few hundred impressions to that page...all search engine referrals.

Perhaps the niche was wrong, though. Or positioned poorly, etc.

Newsletters are as effective as ever provided they offer quality content and are published by a credible source.

Purely commercial opt-in email campaigns (rented lists) have seen a decline in responsiveness, but targeted ezine ads in high quality content publications can consistently provide the highest ROI available via pure paid advertising.

As for opt-in rates, 10% is not unheard of with a well positioned and properly incentivised offering. Anything less than 3% and your offer needs a complete overhaul.
